What Is Cinnamon Leaf Oil

Cinnamon leaf oils contain at least 80% phenols—organic aromatic compounds with a variety of antiseptic, antimicrobial, antioxidant and anesthetic healing properties.
Cinnamon oil is also derived from the plant’s leaves and bark. Cinnamon bark oil is stronger-smelling and more potent than leaf oil, which is musky in scent and lighter in color. Bark oil is highly refined and quite expensive, making the leaf oil a more cost-effective and lightweight option.

Cinnamon Bark

Cinnamon comes from a tree. People use the bark to make medicine.

Cinnamon bark is used for gastrointestinal (GI) upset, diarrhea, and gas. It is also used for stimulating appetite; for infections caused by bacteria and parasitic worms; and for menstrual cramps, the common cold, and the flu (influenza).

The Health Benefits of Cinnamon Essential Oil

Cinnamon essential oil contains a number of compounds thought to influence health. These compounds include cinnamaldehyde, which has been found to reduce inflammation and act as an antimicrobial (a substance that destroys or suppresses the growth of microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi).

Cinnamon essential oil is touted as a natural remedy for health concerns ranging from cough and colds to constipation.

The Differences Between Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil and Cinnamon Leaf Essential Oil

Both cinnamon bark essential oil and cinnamon leaf essential oil come from the same genus of tree, Cinnamomum. Both types of essential oil can be made from several species of cinnamon tree. The most common one used by herbalists to make essential oils is Cinnamomum verum (once called Cinnamomum zeylanicum), also known as “True cinnamon.” However, as the oils’ names suggest, they are made from different parts of the tree.

The Health Potential of Sandalwood

Sandalwood oil is found in many perfumes and air fresheners. It’s a classic scent from a valuable tree. But the value of sandalwood oil may go beyond smell. Sandalwood may offer some health benefits as well.

Sandalwood oil comes from the wood and roots of Santalum album, or the East Indian sandalwood tree. This is one of the most valuable trees in the world. Its products are used across the globe. West Indian and African sandalwood oils have also been produced in the past, but they’re no longer widely available.
